WHERE TO STAY IN DUBAI <> DUBAI , UAE
My last trip to Dubai marked my fourth visit to the UAE in ten years and I still find it a daunting task deciding which part of the city to stay in during my visit. I have typically stayed in Bur Dubai which is the old Dubai before the boom, as hotel rates were typically lower than other neighborhoods. On my most recent trip, I stay in Deira and while I loved the property we stayed in; it was a bit challenging commuting to the sights we wanted to see because I did not have time to plan out the details of the trip. I don’t think any one area is better than another; I think each area has its benefits and drawbacks and where you choose to stay will be a matter of preference and quality of holiday you are looking for during your time in Dubai. To help you decide, I am sharing five of my favorite areas / neighborhoods in the city; along with my recommendations of accommodations in each area. Bur Dubai (Old Dubai) - If you think Dubai and think traditional architecture; souks; Abras (water taxis); and narrow alleys ways, then Bur Dubai is where you want to stay. If you are on a budget, you will not find accommodations cheaper in any other part of town. It is laid back; not dripping in Luxury like Marina or Jumeirah but it is that quietness that made me fall in love with this part of town and still one of my favorite parts to stay when in Dubai. The only downside is the commute to the tourist spots that have made Dubai famous and if you are looking for the finest dining, this may not be the place for you. You will find the Gold, Textile and Spice Souks here along with the Dubai Museum which I recommend visiting. A few place I recommend Arabian Hotel and Spa; Citymax Hotel Bur Dubai and Movenick hotel Bur Dubai.
Deira - This is on the other side of the Dubai creek from Bur Dubai. Deira is one of the older parts of the city and has a mix of traditional buildings and new buildings. I think of it as an extension of Bur Dubai but more modern. It is really close to the airport which comes in handy if your flight is at peak time. From Deira, you also in close proximity to the Souks located in Bur Dubai which can access via Abra (traditional water taxis); 10 minute cab ride or 20 min walk. It is my favorite area to stay as I have typically found luxury accommodations for very affordable prices; the only downside is the network of public transportation was not as easily accessible.. Even with the cab and Uber fares, it was still cheaper than some of my preferred downtown accommodations. I recommend the Park Hyatt Regency or Al Bandar Arjaan by Rotana if you choose to stay in Deira.
Dubai Marina. It is a stark contrast to Deira and Old Dubai. Located south of Jumeirah, this man made coastline is home to very lush accommodations; restaurants, shopping and night life which makes it a tourist favorite. If you are heading to Dubai for the night-life, this is where you want to stay. If night-life is not your thing the stunning skyline and endless shopping and dining option make this is one of the most expensive areas of the city to holiday. Don’t miss Pier 7 which is home to seven of the best restaurants in the city and offers a perfect view of the Marina. I recommend Habtoor Grand Resort; Rove Dubai Marina or Movenpick Hotel Jumeirah Beach.
Jumeirah Beach. The landscape of Jumeriah is one of the reasons those of us who love Dubai love it and it is probably the most photographed landscape in Dubai. Jumeriah runs along the coast and is home to luxury resort hotels and beach clubs. While this area is always a favorite and very highly recommended, the recent opening of the world class beach front - Le Mer makes this an even more attractive part of Dubai to spend your holiday. This area is also home to one of the most iconic structures in the world - the Burj Al Arab. If you have a large accomodationn budget, I recommend the Burj Al Arab. Other options include, the Madinat Jumeirah resort, Jumeirah Beach Hotel, or Sofitel Dubai Jumeirah Beach. If you are staying in this area, you should visit the Wild Wadi Water Park ; Souk Madinat and Jumeirah Mosque.
Downtown Dubai. This is the Dubai you have seen on TV with skyscrappers and world class shopping. It is home to Burj Khalifa the tallest building in the world and Dubai Mall. Along with Palm Jumeirah, this area has historically being the most expensive area to stay in the city, but you will be in the heart of Dubai and in proximity to the attractions and metro and while it is dripping luxury, it is best location for families due to its accessibility to food options; adventure; and shopping. Armani Hotel in Burj Khalifa; Rove Downtown; Welcome Hotel Apartment (2) ; M Hotel Downtown are some of my recommendations for accommodations in downtown Dubai.
