Girl's Guide : Attending a Sporting Event

Girl's Guide : Attending a Sporting Event

baseball opening day 2013

One of the best parts of Spring is the start of baseball season. Today is opening day (first home game of the baseball season) for the Texas Rangers and in honor of spring, baseball and my general love of sports - I thought a sport related post was in order.

When it comes to sporting events, It is sometimes difficult figuring out what is and is not appropriate to do at a game or to wear to a game.  Here are a few tips to consider the next time you attend a sporting event.

1. Leave the heels at home - Wearing heels to a sporting event is NOT smart. You will be walking quite a bit and there is likely a trek from the parking lot to the ballpark (arena/stadium). You will be too miserable to enjoy tailgating or the game if your feet is howling. Stick to flats or riding boots and if you must wear a heel - consider a wedge.

2. Do not wear apparel from another sport or apparel of a team that is not playing. If you are going to a Baseball game, please do not wear a Hockey team apparel (and vice versa).

3. Choose Comfort: Think casual and functional. You will be standing and sitting quite a bit (depending on the performance of the team you are rooting for), so you want to make sure you wear something you are comfortable in. Personally, I avoid dresses and skirts. My go to outfit is a t-shirt with a pair of skinny jeans and flats. If it is cold out, I will do a sweater/hoodie with a blazer and boots.

4. Minimal Makeup: Go for a natural look - Think the "no makeup" makeup look and you want to pick lightweight products.

5. Leave the Tote/Satchel at home: Go with a wristlet or cross body - easier to manage than a massive hand bag - especially if you will be tailgating. Unless, there is an empty seat beside you, your bag does not get its own seat - you either have to seat it on your lap for the entire game or put it on a gross/sticky floor. Best to leave it at home - put your essentials in a wristlet or wear a cross body bag.

6. Learn a thing or two about the team/sport: You don't need to get technical or try to understand a tag or a strike (or when a player travels or is offside), but you should know basic things like  - the sport, team name, team color [and it does not hurt to know a few of the rules of the sports and some lingo - noting worse than asking if a homerun is a goal].

7. Join in the fun: Participiate in the traditions of the sports - Mexican Wave at a Football (aka Soccer) game; 7th Inning Stretch at a baseball game. Those little things are the cherry on top.

8. Show Team Spirit Wisely : Avoid the full face paint in your team color - the effect on your skin is NOT worth it. Avoid a full on Jersey - its not flattering on us. If you really want to wear your team's jersey, consider picking it up in kids' size so that it fits.

9. Be Sensitive to your environment: It is okay that you don't know anything about the team or the sport; and asking questions is great, but asking a question at the wrong time will earn you a death stare (assuming anyone even hears your question). When everyone is on the edge of their seat, biting their nails - that is not the time to ask - what a"grand slam" or "penalty" means.

10. No Thrash Talk - Unless you know what you are talking about. Even when you know what is going on , you have to be smart about thrash talking. I have been nearly punched out for rightfully calling out a certain player for flopping. Avoid thrash talking and if you must - proceed with caution.

These are just a few tips to guide you the next time you attend a sporting event. I am off to the ball park.
