I am trying to get back into reading - it is something I enjoyed doing until about ten years ago hen I started the long process of a professional exam. It took me longer to pass than anticipated, and by the end of it, whatever joy I had for reading was gone. I have spent the better part of the last five years trying to get back into reading and not quite succeeding (read: I have started several books and not managed to finish 95% of them).
Earlier this year, a friend turned me onto audible, and it has helped me get back into books - not “reading so much,” but that shut the world out and delve into the “pages” of an excellent book. I have several books downloaded and in print that I have not gotten around to yet.
At the top of my summer bucket list is getting through at least five books. I just finished Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers and loved it. The other books I am hoping to get to this summer;
Everybody Always by Bob Goff;
Midnight at Chernobyl by Adam Higginbotham;
Say Nothing by Patrick Radden Keefe;
Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates;
The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett;
She Said by Jodi Kantor and Megan Twohey;
Billion Dollar Whale by Tom Wright & Bradley Hope.
Here is this week’s offering of all the things I have discovered; treasured; enjoyed, and delved into; I even included a simple Yuca fries recipe. Go ahead, take a big slice; come back for seconds.
The Architectural Digest open door series on youtube is where I am getting my binge fix - my favorite so far Nate and Jeremiah’s home; Tyler Perry’s studios and Aaron Paul’s rustic home. Stunning!
BLACK AF - I did not expect to love the show - I have seen (best estimate) 5 episodes of other Kenya Burris shows combined, so I was not sure what to expect going in. I loved it, and now on my third viewing. I am eagerly awaiting season 2.
A recipe for the Dishoom Ruby Chicken curry is one of the best gifts the internet has given in a long time.
Real Friends / Fake Doctors - How have I not shared this with you? The podcast based on the TV show Scrubs, which was/is one of my favorite shows. Two of the lead characters are revisiting every episode - pure joy!
I stumbled on this post I wrote in 2017 listing my top 10 favorite Ted Talks - it sent me down a rabbit hole, and these remain my favorite Ted Talks - give it a listen this week
I made yuca chips this week - it was terrific! I intended to recreate it since my trip to Jamaica last Christmas and never got around to it. It was so simple - slice the yuca; boil in salted water for about 30 minutes. Season with lemon juice; olive oil; salt; smoked paprika and chili powder. Heat the oil and fry the yuca till crispy - serve with ketchup or hot sauce.
